Grants That Are Available For Children of Disabled Parents

Many disabled parents wonder how they are going to pay for their child's education. It can be difficult for a parent to pay for education if they do not have a stable income. The good news is that there are several programs available for people who are the child of a disabled parent. People who have a disabled grandparent may also be able to get a grant.

Paralyzed Veterans of America

In order to qualify for a scholarship or grant through Paralyzed Veterans of America, you must be under the age of 24 and unmarried. You must also be a child or a grandchild of a paralyzed veteran. This organization was started in 1986. Paralyzed Veterans of America have given out over $300,000 in scholarships since its inception. A parent who wants to apply must be a member of the organization. You can start applying for a scholarship or grant in April.

Paralyzed Veterans of America will give out one scholarship each year to a full-time student. They will also give out two $500 scholarships to part-time students. You can reapply for the scholarship every year.

Through the Looking Glass

Through the Looking Glass is an organization that is dedicated to assisting families who have a disabled family member. In order to qualify for the scholarship, you must have at least one disabled parent. High school students and current college students are eligible for the scholarship. However, the recipient must be under the age of 21. Through the Looking Glass gives out 10 $1,000 scholarships every year.

The National MS Society Scholarship Program

The National MS society Scholarship Program is available for children whose parents have multiple sclerosis. In order to get this scholarship, you must be a high school senior. The National MS Society has given out over $1 million in scholarships. The maximum amount that a student can get is $3,000 per year. However, a person can get more if they have extreme financial need.

Applicants will know whether they have been approved for a scholarship in the spring. The company will start to accept applications in October 1. People have until January 14 to submit their application for this scholarship.

Deceased or Disabled Public Safety Officer Grant Program

This scholarship is available for people who are in the state of Oregon. It is for people whose parents were killed or disabled in the line of duty. If you have a stepparent who was killed or disabled in the line of duty, then you may also be able to get a Deceased or Disabled Public Safety Officer Grant.

Firefighters, correction officers, sheriffs, police officers, probation officers, deputy sheriffs and state fire marshalls are examples of public safety officers who are eligible. You will need to be a full-time undergraduate student in order to apply for this scholarship.

Mass Mutual Scholars Program

In order to be eligible for the Mass Mutual Scholars Program, you must have at least one disabled parent. You must also have a GPA of 3.0 or more and attend an accredited university. Additionally, you will have to prove that you have financial need by filling out a FAFSA.

You can get up to $5,000. March 31 is the deadline to apply for a scholarship.

The Crane Foundation

If your parent ever worked for the Crane Foundation, then you may be able to get a scholarship. The Crane Foundation has scholarships for several people including widows. However, it also has scholarships for disabled people. This organization has provided thousands of dollars in assistance to people who need it.

Millie Brother Scholarship

If one of your parents is deaf, then you may be able to get the Millie Brother Scholarship. One of the many great things about this scholarship is that you can get it regardless of whether you are a graduate or an undergraduate student. Two $3,000 scholarships will be given out per year. This scholarship is only available for one year, but you can reapply for it every year.

You will need to submit an application along with a two-page essay. You will also need to submit a letter of agreement along with two letters of recommendation and an official transcript. Previous winners are given priority.
